Effective 1 January 2027, the EU mandates that stationary split air-to-water air-conditioning and heat pump equipment under 12kW utilise refrigerants with a GWP (Global Warming Potential) below 150, except when essential for safety standards. The same requirement for air-to-air systems below 12kW will come into effect 1 January 2029. For larger split systems exceeding 12kW, the GWP must be below 750 effective 1 January 2029.
Although the UK has not finalised similar regulations, it is expected to follow suit due to commitments under the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Amendment, likely increasing the use of R290. While R290 offers benefits like low GWP and high heat transfer performance, it is highly flammable, necessitating specialised training for safe handling.
This bulletin provides an overview of R290's properties and the necessary safety measures for its use, including the need for leak detection, strict charge limitations, and careful installation practices to mitigate fire risks.
