Fire dampers installed in ventilation systems play a critical role in maintaining fire separation, and in achieving property and life safety within buildings. Whilst long-standing guidance on the correct installation of fire dampers is contained in several publications, some historic custom and practice has meant that installations do not meet the requirements of the published guidance. In particular, the use of self-drilling screws in ductwork connections to fire dampers. Despite previous advice, information campaigns and recent updates to guidance dealing with the subject of self-drilling screws, there continues to be uncertainty on what actions should be taken when self-drilling screws have been used. This paper seeks to provide clarity to duty holders, designers, contractors, installers, and maintenance providers.
